2019 President Bernadette Hoban

Last week, the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first Pride March which turned into a riot after the police raided the Stonewall Tavern in Greenwich Village. Things have certainly changed since 1969, now the police not only protect the marchers, they also proudly march as part of the Gay Officers Action League (GOAL). Now that’s what I call change!

Do you remember where you were on June 28th 1969? I was only 11 years old but by the time I became a teenager, I was very aware of how important this day was to my LGBTQ friends. By June of 1983, I was in NYC cheering on the marchers as they paraded down 5th Avenue. As I watched the March, part of me felt very comfortable and yet part of me was still trying to figure out how I “fit in” this amazing rainbow. As the years went by, the world continued to evoke change and so did our LGBTQ community.

Yes, we have evolved over the past 50 years but we still have a long way to go. Hate crimes against LGBTQ people are up over the past two years in this country. Our community is still facing discrimination every day in stores, hospitals and in the workplace. This is unacceptable and that’s why we still have to march and fight for equality at all levels.

On the flip side, we are fortunate to live in a part of the country where we can live our lives without much resistance. But it’s important to remember how difficult life can be for many of our LGBTQ brothers and sisters who are struggling with family and friends simply because of who they are and who they love.

Happy World Pride to all of you and if you were one of the 112 women who attended our annual NFWFWF Pride Party in Greenport, thank you for making it a huge success. It was our biggest turnout ever for this event. All the proceeds raised will go to assist lesbians on the North Fork with health/wellness grants and our HelpHer services.

Looking forward to officially kicking off the summer with seeing you all at our next FFF on July 5th at American Beech in Greenport.

Sincerely,

Bernie Hoban
